So you find yourself driving
So you find yourself driving down Interstate 40 one day in December. It’s a beautiful sunny day with snow on the ground, yet not cold enough to keep you inside all day. The thought of the New Year pops into your head when something grabs your attention on the horizon. Your hands tighten on the steering wheel as you lean forward, trying to make out what it is. It grows larger with every exit you pass. You lean back now, eyes growing, you can make it out now. It stands taller than anything else around, shines with a million tiny lights, and pulls you closer with every passing second. You suddenly realize that you are pushing 90mph with the excitement of trying to get there; so you coast a little, adjust the seat belt, change the CD, and stretch the back.
After this intermission you try to make out the sign, your mind racing with questions. “What is it called? What is it? Why is it here? Why do I want to go there? How can I get there faster?” Your foot pushes the accelerator; the site of it gets larger through the windshield. Again, 90mph, you back off, change lanes and decide to check it out for yourself.
Sitting at the red light you squirm, wiggle; trying to fit the view of it through your sunroof and windshield. Green means “go” and you are off, steering more out of the corner of your eye as you marvel at the size of it. Red neon shoots up what seems to be 1 million stories, the windows a blue unrivaled by the sky, the concrete a white that is flawless. You read “Koury Convention Center,” as the letters disappear as you pull up to the front. The doors sweep you in, as the carpet hugs your feet. Your body screams for joy as you are finally out of the car, finally here. “But is this truly the place? Is this where the conference will be?”
Yes, the majesty of the Koury Convention Center will be home to you are all your friends this winter. It is truly a site to see, a wonder to behold, a gem to cherish, but not importantly a place to encounter.
